What Are Automotive Scroll Compressors?

A scroll compressor consists of two spiral-shaped scrolls: one fixed and one orbiting. The orbiting scroll moves in a small circular path around the fixed scroll without rotating, forming crescent-shaped chambers between the two. Refrigerant is drawn in at the outer edge, compressed as the chambers shrink toward the center, and then discharged into the condenser through the discharge port at the center of the scrolls.
